  16. <p>The CIA admits misleading prosecutors in the Iraqgate affair
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    The timing could not have been worse for the Bush campaign.
  19. The Senate Intelligence Committee is burrowing into the
  20. possibility that the CIA and the Justice Department collaborated
  21. to mislead prosecutors looking into the Banca Nazionale del
  22. Lavoro's illicit loans to Iraq. Blaming an "honest mistake," CIA
  23. officials have conceded responsibility for a Sept. 17 letter
  24. that failed to advise prosecutors and a federal judge that the
  25. agency possessed a cache of classified cables relating to the
  26. case. Late last week, according to the New York Times and the
  27. Washington Post, CIA officials testified in closed hearings that
  28. a senior Justice Department official had pressured them to
  29. dispatch the misleading letter. The CIA and Justice denied the
  30. reports. Said the Justice official in question, Laurence
  31. Urgenson, a Deputy Assistant Attorney General: "I can't pressure
  32. the CIA. I can't even get them to return my phone calls."
  33. </p>
  34. <p>    Immediately at stake is the fate of BNL's former Atlanta
  35. branch manager, Christopher Drogoul, who faces trial for
  36. allegedly engineering $4 billion in illegal loans to Iraq. But
  37. of increasing concern is the credibility of the CIA, the Justice
  38. Department and the Bush Administration. Even if it amounts to
  39. a mere bureaucratic botch, the tussle over who misled the public
  40. allows Democrats to renew calls for a special prosecutor to
  41. examine whether the White House tried to cover up its efforts
  42. to coddle Saddam Hussein before the invasion of Kuwait.
